C-USA Softball Champs! Sunday, May 9, 2004
Auriel Jenkins blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Southern Miss a 3-2 victory over Louisville, Sunday, that gave the Lady Eagles the outright 2004 regular season Conference USA championship.
With the score tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jenkins made her only hit in the game a big one, blasting the 2-2, one-out pitch to left center field to give Southern Miss the 3-2 lead. In the top of the seventh, starter Jessica Holaway and the Lady Eagle defense retired the side in order with second baseman Charity Butler recording the final out on a pop fly to second.
The victory gave Southern Miss (32-22, 19-4) just the second regular season championship in school history -- along with the inaugural league title in 2000 -- and the first regular season crown for fourth-year Head Coach Gay McNutt. |

HATTIESBURG - It took just one official visit for Lincoln, NE Lutheran High volleyball player Angela Hlavaty to end her college recruiting process. At the end of her trip to Southern Miss on August 24, 2005, the 6-foot-4 senior middle blocker made an oral commitment to the Golden Eagles.
"I didn't need to look anymore. I fell in love with it,'' said Hlavaty, who took unofficial visits to Kansas, Northern Illinois and Wichita State this spring and summer and also was being heavily recruited by Marquette.
"The coach (Ricci Luyties) is awesome, I love warm weather and the girls on the team have the same kind of personality that I do. It seemed like the right place for me."
Hlavaty becomes the fourth Lincoln volleyball player from the class of 2006 to accept an NCAA Division I scholarship offer. Lincoln Northeast Super-Stater Brooke Bartek committed to Nebraska a year ago. Hlavaty's teammate at Lutheran, Allison Raguse, and Lincoln Pius X's Pam Jarrett are headed to Northern Colorado and Maryland-Baltimore County, respectively.
Hlavaty, a former power lifter, is one of the strongest players in the state. The first-team all-stater pounded 260 kills with a .460 hitting efficiency in helping the Warriors win the Class C-1 state title in 2004. She had 20 kills in the five-game win against Columbus Scotus in the state finals, a performance that caught the attention of several Division I schools.
Southern Miss became interested in Hlavaty after seeing her play at the USA Volleyball junior national tournament in Salt Lake City in July. Hlavaty played for the Star City 171 team. A middle blocker through her high school career, Hlavaty could play outside hitter at Southern Mississippi.
"They told me and my wife, Sue, that Angela was their No. 1 recruit," said Ross Hlavaty, Angela's father. "They told us 'We have to have her.' That impressed Angela.''
Luyties, a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic gold medal men's volleyball team, is a former Colorado assistant. He's beginning his second season as the Southern Miss head coach after going 7-20 last season.
The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team opens the regular season at intra state rival Mississippi State on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005. This is the season opener for both teams. |

Lincoln Nebraska's Hlavaty commits to Southern Miss |

The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team has begun preparations for the 2005 season. Head coach Gail Macklin said "the team is ready to get the season underway."
"We're very excited to get started," Macklin said, who enters her second year at the helm. "We're trying to get ready and cover all of our bases, installing both our offense and defense.
Senior Micah Stephens is one of three seniors on this year's team. The Dallas, Texas native said she expects her senior year to be one of success.
"We have a lot of experience on this team," Stephens said, who will miss the Texas A&M game recovering from surgery on her knee. "It's going to take a lot of leadership, especially from the seniors."
"There is no reason why we can't compete with any team we play," Stephens said. "Last season was frustrating. We will be much better this season."
Southern Miss returns eight starters and 14 letterwinners from last year's team that finished 5-11-1. Eight newcomers join the squad this season.
